Film Openings Research

After figuring out the genre for the project (action/crime (I know these genres weren't what I researched)), I have analyzed and quickly summarized three film openings that correlate with the genre and have also done analysis on the credit sequences for these film openings in the next post. The three films I decided to conduct research on were The Dark Knight (2008), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) and Casino Royale (2006). Here is what I found about their openings:

    The Dark Knight (2008):

    Summary:
The film starts with a group of  five masked men who go to rob a bank. Two of the men zip line from a building to the roof of the bank while the other three men arrive by car on the ground. The two men on the roof work to deactivate a silent alarm system while the other three men begin to cause chaos at the front entrance of the bank where they start to hold customers and employees hostage with various weapons. As soon as the alarm gets deactivated, one of the masked men on the roof gets shot by the other masked man in an unusual turn of events. Later on, someone on the ground begins to break the vault door open while a man working for the bank inside an office cubicle begins to grab a shotgun and shoot one of the men on the ground dead. He then gets into a brief shootout with the other two masked men on the ground where he later gets shot but does not die immediately. At this point, the vault door gets opened but then, the same man who shot the first man on the roof starts to talk about how he shot that man and then shortly shoots the man who broke into the vault. One of the masked men then starts to collect money from the vault and stores it in duffel bags at the main area of the bank. The man who has shot two other masked men at this point then points his gun at another masked man, but as they are speaking about where the money is gonna go, a school bus crashes into the man with the gun while the other man moves aside before the bus crashed through the wall. That man then begins loading the duffel bags into the bus where he then shoots and kills the last masked man remaining aside from himself. As he is about to leave, the man who was in the shootout with the masked men speaks about how criminals are dumb these days and used to believe in respect and honor and then asks what does the man believe in. The masked man then removes his mask and then says that he believes that whatever does not make you die, makes you stranger before putting an explosive in the other mans mouth. The removal of the mask reveals that the man is The Joker from the DC franchise.

    Analysis:
The opening scene of the film is portrayed as a self contained mini story complete with a beginning, escalation and twists throughout it. As this is revealed to be DC film, The Joker (antagonist) being introduced before Batman (protagonist), positions chaos as a central threat rather than isolated. The editing and pacing of the opening is clean which allows for every action being legible and purposeful. Sounds used at first are ambient sounds of the environment and dialogue but then as the story goes by, music starts to creep in which overall, creates tension. The Joker can be observed as manipulative as he manipulates other members of the group into doing all the work while he kills them as time passes.

    Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991):

    Summary:
The film opens with a scene that shows the modern day world (at the time) and the normal day to day activity of a city. Shortly after that, the scene cuts to a post apocalyptic, far future environment where everything and everyone is destroyed and is quiet overall. The location of the post apocalyptic world is soon revealed to be Los Angles in the year 2029A.D. As the post apocalyptic world is shown through a camera pan, a voiceover starts to describe what happened. The voiceover describes how billions of lives were ended due to a nuclear war but that the war would then continue on through a battle between machines and human survivors. The scene then cuts to an ongoing war between machines and humans and for a while, machines were destroyed and humans were killed at the same time. The voiceover later describes how the first terminator sent to the voiceover's speaker failed its job and how a second terminator was now being sent after her young son who would go on to be the leader of the human resistance movement. The scene then cuts to the beginning credits and then later back to the present day world.

    Analysis:
The opening is a visual prologue that shows both the present day and the post apocalyptic future and the war between the humans and machines. This allows for an establishing of stakes of what is going to happen before the main story begins. Imagery such as skulls, fires, and machines further adds to the post apocalyptic setting and sets the tone for a scary, tense environment along with it. The skulls symbolize and foreshadow how fragile humanity becomes in the future.

    Casino Royale (2006):

    Summary:
The film begins with a completely black and white opening which shows a man entering a building where he then takes an elevator to his office where James Bond is waiting for him. He speaks very suddenly as the opening is considerably silent up until now. Bond and what is later shown as his boss start to talk about how Bond has not earned double O status as an agent which requires two kills. This leads to a cutaway that shows Bond and another guy fighting in a bathroom which soon gets interrupted by the main scene and then cuts back to the boss pointing a gun directly at Bond while saying they didn't get to meet each other. However, when the boss pulls the trigger, the gun does not fire as it is unloaded. Bond then pulls a loaded gun and says that he knows where he puts his gun. Soon after, the cutaway between Bond and the man in the bathroom continues where Bond ends up drowning the guy in a sink. The cutaway then gets interrupted again where Bond describes how he already killed one person and that the second person is going to be the boss. Bond then shoots and kills the boss. The cutaway then continues one last time showing Bond and the drowned man. The drowned man then gets up one last time to pick up a gun nearby him but Bond is quick enough to shoot him first with his own gun. The shot then transforms the cutaway into the credit sequences.

    Analysis:
The opening consists of two main parts, the confrontational dialogue and the brutal bathroom fight flashback. The scenes show how Bond earns his double O status by killing two people which are the man in the bathroom and the boss. The black and white scene highlights the difference between the moral clarity and the brutality between the two scenes. The editing is what breaks the long dialogue scenes through the periodic violent fight scenes. Overall, the fight scenes that interrupt the dialogue are what define Bond as a raw killer who is physical and rough rather than the typical spy like nature he is known for.

Full Project Schedule

After about a day of planning out how our project is going to go, me and my partner have now came up with a full schedule which highlights exactly what we are going to do for each week we have to work on this project. Below is a picture of the project schedule on paper that we wrote when we were first planning our schedule and edited as we continued planning:

Here is an idea of our schedule in text:

Week 1 (1/16-1/23): Watch various film openings produced from past years' students; Research various genres (would choose one in week 2). (Week has already passed).

Week 2 (1/26-2/1): Make the schedule (already done); Choose a genre that we both agree on and make ideas based on the genre; Create a story board; Research character development, media theories, and create a rough outline of the film opening. All while gathering inspiration.

Week 3 (2/2-2/8): Begin filming (film A LOT); Record audio (foley); Analyze exactly what we film and how exactly we go forward with the recordings.

Week 4 (2/9-2/15): Start eliminating subpar recordings and begin editing good recordings; Find out what we did wrong during recording.

Week 5 (2/16-2/22): Extension of week 4. (Mostly refining our edits).

Week 6 (2/23-3/1): Fully finish film opening; Begin planning and answering questions of CCR; Plan and begin production of CCR.

Week 7 (3/2-3/8): Continue and finish answering questions and production of CCR.

Week 8 (3/9-3/17): Extension of week 7. (Extra time to refine and finish CCR if needed; Submit final project).

Keep in mind that during the eight weeks it will take to produce the finished project, we will also be keeping up with various blog posts that range from many topics such as research, production process, summaries, and plans. Stay tuned for them!

Portfolio Project Genre #2

The second genre I would like to propose for our upcoming portfolio project is Teen/Young Adult Drama, specifically the Coming Of Age sector. I believe that this genre would work well with our project as this specific genre focuses on the introduction of characters rather than starting with a big event that audience might not have an idea of. This works very well if we decide that we want to go forward with a genre that focuses on dialogue and realism as opposed to paranoia and mystery (what I discussed in the first genre posting) and thus gives us two polar opposite differences in genre which allows for more variety in our options.

People who watch this genre are typically teenaged as these people generally favor common themes which resonate with them such as identity, relationships, pressure and loneliness. The added bonus here is that the people who watch this genre are often similarly aged as the characters in the films which uses this genre. These films often consist of a protagonist who faces a personal conflict while everything else is maintained to be as realistic as possible, from emotions to setting and many more aspects as well. Natural lighting along with a simple camera setup allow for an even more realistic environment which is exactly what the target audience wants specifically.

The institutions which produce these kinds of films are often independent studios while also being heavily marketed through various forms of social media which often further appeals to authenticity and realism. Two examples of films which fit this genre are Lady Bird (2017) and The Edge of Seventeen (2016).

Portfolio Project Genre #1

The first genre I would like to propose to be a part of our portfolio project is Psychological Thriller. I believe that this would be a good genre because of how they rely on atmosphere, mystery and tensions to introduce audiences to a film instead of giving cut and dry answers or a full plot resolution which describes how the rest of the film goes. The unknown element of the genre is what questions audience into what could happen next instead of giving a structured timeline of events which might seem boring to some people.

Most people who watch this genre are usually from their mid teens to their mid adulthoods and often enjoy suspense, mystery and overall darker themes. Content and technique wise, what would fit this genre would be elements of paranoia, isolation, and fear, as they further add on to the mystery narrative going on. Low key lighting along with uncomfortable elements such as close ups, slow pacing and non diegetic sound would make this genre even more of a good use case for the project.

The institutions that are responsible for making these films are often independent or mid size indie studios. The institutions often prioritize mystery and psychological tension rather than action and anything from promotional material like posters and trailers will avoid revealing too much of the plot and narrative in order to protect the element of mystery. Two examples of films that demonstrate this genre are Black Swan (2010) and Shutter Island (2010).

Official Transition to Portfolio Project.

Hello all, I have reached the point in the academic year where I officially transition to the start of my nearly two month long project for AICE Media Studies: The Portfolio Project. This project consists of creating a film opening for a fiction film which can consist of any genre. After that is done, a CCR (Creative Critical Reflection) must be done which demonstrates a reflection the film opening creation process. The CCR is done through various digital formats.

With this project starting, I am now tasked with planning how the project is actually going to go and how I would treat the project going forward. I decided that I was going to work on this with one other person so that this could be a thoughtful collaborative process that we could both utilize in order to delegate work and share ideas with each other. At this time, we have yet to fully decide our genre for the project but I, myself would like to propose two genres. These two genres are described in my next two posts after this particular post. As for overall planning of the project, we will first decide on what exact genre we would do, and then from there we plan to start gathering inspiration from various film openings that are based on the exact same genre that we decide on in the near future. We want to start at a steady pace so that we do not quickly overwhelm ourselves as this project is something that we both believe that should be taken very seriously and with caution as well. Overall, as soon as we begin planning for this portfolio project, we will prioritize our ideas which come throughout the planning stage and as ideas flow in, we then filter through them and then land on some which we both agree on and believe they are supportive ideas which are relevant to our research and genre. My next posts are my two proposed genres for this project.

Here are the Final Products!

Wow, we have really came this far. That’s actually insane in my opinion, but anyways, here’s what I and my partner have been working for...
